Key Differences Between Web 1.0 and Web 2.0

Friday, July 11, 2008 - Lawrence Hsu | BC

Web 2.0 is a buzzword introduced in 2003–04 which is commonly used to encompass various novel phenomena on the World Wide Web. Although largely a marketing term, some of the key attributes associated with Web 2.0 include the growth of social networks, bi–directional communication, various ‘glue’ technologies, and significant diversity in content types. We are not aware of a technical comparison between Web 1.0 and 2.0. While most of Web 2.0 runs on the same substrate as 1.0, there are some key differences. We capture those differences and their implications for technical work in this paper.

Check this out if you don't want certain content to appear in the search engine results.

Today, in that same spirit of making the lives of webmasters simpler, we're releasing detailed documentation about how we implement REP. This will provide a common implementation for webmasters and make it easier for any publisher to know how their REP directives will be handled by three major search providers -- making REP more intuitive and friendly to even more publishers on the web.

50+ Designers to Follow on Twitter

Tuesday, June 10, 2008 - Lawrence Hsu | BC

Twitter seems to be gaining popularity almost every day. As a new user I decided it would be helpful to do some research to find designers who would be worth following. This list is not intended to be all-inclusive (so please add a link to your profile in the comments if you like), but it should give you a great start to following some talented designers. This is a list of over 50 designers, in no particular order, with a link to their Twitter profile.

Useful Podcasts For Designers And Developers

Thursday, June 05, 2008 - Lawrence Hsu | BC

Audio podcasts are a great way to stay informed about web design news, learn about emerging technologies, listen to discussions, and continuously learn about the ever-changing landscape of web design — on your way to work or before you go to bed. Videocasts are great at showing step by step tutorials, or delivering visually rich presentations. Many of the long running successful podcasts have communities built around the show. Forums and detailed show notes are usual for a podcast that regularly serves its community. The time span of how long a podcast exists often indicates its level of quality and professionalism.

Monday, May 26, 2008 - Lawrence Hsu | BC

I accidently figured out how to create HTML signatures with embedded image in OS X so here's a tiny tutorial to show you how it's done.

  1. Create your HTML signature and embed the image.
  2. View the HTML signature in any browser.
  3. Select all (command + a) and copy (command + c)
  4. Open Mail -> Preferences (command + ,) -> Signatures tab -> Create a signature (+ below the second panel)
  5. Paste (command + v) in the signature panel (the third panel).
  6. To add a signature to an email account simply drag the signature into the email account (from second panel to the first panel).

Too easy :]

Time for some clarifications!

When the term design is used it can mean many things, depending on who you are and which conversation you are having. Rarely do people stop to compare 'mental maps' and clarify which type of design they are talking about!

“What is Firebug?” you may ask. Firebug is an excellent Firefox browser extension that is great for troubleshooting, editing, monitoring, and debugging. It is free and open source. It is one of my favorite web development tools.

I was going to write an article on Firebug but looks like it's been done over and over again.
